Gilmartin was shot in an "ambush-style attack" on North Decker Court early on Thursday, Jan. 11, police have said. He and two other officers were sitting in an unmarked police car when 20-year-old Aiden Deininger shot at the vehicle, hitting Gilmartin twice in the head, according to state troopers.
Another officer returned fire, shooting Deininger five times, officials said. Both were taken to the hospital in "critical but stable condition."
Deininger has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer and related offenses, said state police investigators. During his bedside arraignment at Geisinger CMC on Wednesday, the 20-year-old was restrained using Gilmartin's handcuffs.
Meanwhile, community members have rallied to support the ailing detective while he is treated for his wounds.
On GoFundMe.com, a Fraternal Order of Police-led fundraising campaign has received more than $175,000 to benefit Gilmartin and his family.
Campaign organizer Paul Tomczyk said he's been "overwhelmed" by the outpouring of community support.
"The community has rallied above and beyond the tragedy that occurred and its voice has been heard," he wrote. "The family of Kyle along with his family of crime fighters thank you for your continued generosity(.)"
Gilmartin, Tomcyzk said in an update on Tuesday, Jan. 16, is already showing promising signs of improvement.
"Kyle is currently breathing on his own and continues to make remarkable strides in his recovery," he wrote. "Of course, we are all just beginning this long journey with him, and will continue to walk side by side in solidarity until he is back on his feet once again."
Throughout Scranton, businesses and other organizations are showing their support for the ailing detective, as well.
